Institute of State and Law of the CAS

Ján Matejka (*1976) is a prominent Czech scientist in the field of law. In 2000, he completed his studies at the Faculty of Law at the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň, where he earned his Mgr. degree. In 2001, he was awarded the JUDr. degree after defending his rigorous thesis, and in 2006, he defended his dissertation on the topic "Labour Law Relations in the Information Society."

Since 2000, he has been working at the Institute of State and Law of the CAS, where he held the position of researcher in the Department of Private Law, focusing on EU law, civil law, and information technology law. From 2006 to 2015, he led the Department of Private Law, from 2009 to 2015, he was the Deputy Director, and from 2015 to 2025, he served as the Director of the Institute.

He is the guarantor of the course Legal Aspects of Data Protection at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University in Prague, where he has been affiliated as an external lecturer at the Department of Algebra since 2005. From 2016 to 2022, he served as a member of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Law at Charles University, and since 2020, he has been a member of the Scientific Council of the Institute of State and Law of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava.

Since 2002, he has been a member of the Review Commission of the Office for Personal Data Protection, and since 2012, a member of the Examination Board for the Advanced Master's State Examination at Masaryk University in Brno. From 2009 to 2013, he was the chair of the Evaluation Panel for Juridical Science and Political Science of the Czech Science Foundation (GACR) and a member of the Discipline Committee for Social Sciences and Humanities of the GACR.

Ján Matejka is a member of the supervisory boards of several institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences. From 2016, he was a member and vice-chair of the Council for the Use of Intellectual Property of the CAS, and since 2019, a member of the Committee for Artificial Intelligence at the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic.

In the field of educational activities, he serves as an external collaborator at the Department of Labour Law and Social Security Law at the Faculty of Law, Charles University, where he regularly teaches the course Employment Policy and Personnel Management. In the past, he was the guarantor of the course Internet and Computer Law at the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň, where he also led the Department of Labour Law and Social Security Law.
