Astronomical Institute of the CAS

Soňa Ehlerová (*1972) is dedicated to research in the field of astronomy. After studying at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, she obtained her Ph.D. there in 2000, defending her dissertation on HI envelopes in numerical simulations and in the Milky Way.

She has been associated with the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences (ASÚ) since 1995. From 2001 to 2005, she was the editor of the institute's journal.

Throughout her career, she has undertaken several significant scientific and observational stays. In 1995 and 1999, she spent four months at Christian Albrechts University in Kiel. In 1997, she worked at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, conducting observations with the 100m radio telescope. In 2014, 2015, and 2018, she participated in observations at La Silla (ESO, Chile) with the 2.2m MPG/ESO telescope.

Since 2014, she has been a member of the Academy Assembly, since 2018 a member of the Collegium of Popularisers of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and since 2022 the Chairwoman of the Commission for Equal Opportunities.

Her involvement with the European Southern Observatory (ESO) includes membership and later leadership of the Czech popularisation node ESON from 2010 to 2020. Since 2017, she has been a member of the ESO Committee at the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MŠMT), where she has served as Chairwoman since 2023. Since 2021, she has been the scientific delegate for the Czech Republic in the ESO Council.

Soňa Ehlerová is a member of several significant scientific organisations, including the International Astronomical Union (IAU), where she served on the Membership Committee and as the Czech National Outreach Coordinator. She is also a member of the Czech group of IAU OAE and the European Astronomical Society. In the Czech Astronomical Society, she has been a member of the executive committee since 2021.

In the field of teaching and student supervision, she has focused on galactic and extragalactic astronomy at Charles University, where she supervises master's and doctoral students. Since 2020, she has been involved in supervising high school students in the Open Science programme of the CAS.
