Martin Pivokonský (*1974) completed his studies at the Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague, in 1999, specialising in Environmental Protection. In 2002, he earned his Ph.D. and RNDr. degrees in Applied and Landscape Ecology from the same faculty. In 2016, he became an associate professor in Environmental Sciences. Since 2002, he has been working at the Institute of Hydrodynamics of the CAS (IH), where he led the Department of Fluid Mechanics and Dispersed Systems and served as its director from 2017 to 2025.

Martin Pivokonský's research focuses on the hydrochemistry of natural organic matter, organic micropollutants and microplastics, water quality and treatment, water pollution and protection, environmental sciences, environmental technologies, and water treatment and purification technologies, as well as water recycling research. He has coordinated and led numerous domestic and international projects, including those funded by the European Commission, the Czech Science Foundation, and the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic.

At the beginning of his tenure on the Academy Council, he was the author or co-author of more than 72 scientific papers published in renowned international journals, 6 monographs, and 3 book chapters. His work has been cited over 2,900 times, and his H-index is 24. In addition to basic research, he has extensive practical experience in optimising and designing technologies directly in water treatment and purification plants. He actively participates in teaching and supervising students at Charles University in Prague.

He is a member of many professional societies, including the International Water Association – Specialist Group on Particle Separation and the Specialist Group on Natural Organic Matter Research. He is also a member of the editorial board of the European Journal of Environmental Sciences.

For his research, he has received several prestigious awards, including the President of the Czech Science Foundation Award for the project "The Influence of Organic Substances Produced by Cyanobacteria on the Properties of Flocs Formed During Coagulation/Flocculation in Water Treatment", and the Award of the President of the Czech Academy of Sciences for Outstanding Scientists (Praemium Academiae). He also devotes considerable attention to the popularisation of science, for which he received the Award of the President of the Czech Academy of Sciences for the Promotion or Popularisation of Research, Experimental Development and Innovation.
