Marcela Buchtová (*1972) is a prominent Czech scientist specialising in developmental biology. She graduated from the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University in Brno, where she earned her Mgr. degree in Animal Physiology in 1997 and her RNDr. degree in the same field in 2004. She received her Ph.D. in Veterinary Morphology and Physiology from the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno in 2003 and habilitated in Normal and Pathological Morphology in 2010.

From 2000, she worked as an assistant at the University of Veterinary Sciences Brno (VFU), focusing on teaching histology and embryology, and she served a term as a member of the Academic Senate of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at VFU. From 2004 to 2007, she was at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada), and upon her return, she joined the Institute of Animal Physiology and Genetics of the CAS, where she is currently the Deputy Director for Science. Since 2015, she has also been an academic staff member at the Institute of Experimental Biology at Masaryk University in Brno, where she completed her professorship in 2024.

Her scientific focus includes developmental biology, molecular embryology, and microscopic anatomy. She also works on advanced techniques for studying the development of teeth and jaws, molecular mechanisms of limb development, causes of developmental disorders, and cancer in the oral cavity, as well as the positive and negative effects of nanoparticles on tissues.

Marcela Buchtová is an active member of many significant scientific societies, including the Czech Anatomical Society (member of the board), the Society for Developmental Biology, and a founding member of the V4 Society for Developmental Biology, where she currently serves as president. She has extensive experience serving on various doctoral boards at universities, the Sectoral Expert Commission of the Czech Academy of Sciences for approving animal experiment projects, the Council for Cooperation with Universities, and is currently a member of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Science at Charles University.

She is the author or co-author of more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications, teaches courses on developmental biology and microscopic anatomy at Masaryk University, prepares lifelong learning courses focused on working with laboratory animals, and organises outreach activities for the public.
