Institute of Microbiology of the CAS
Petr Baldrian (*1972) completed his studies in Microbiology at the Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague, in 1996. In 2000, he earned his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the same faculty. Since then, he has been working at the Institute of Microbiology of the CAS (IMIC), where he leads the Laboratory of Environmental Microbiology.
Petr Baldrian's research focuses on the ecology of soil fungi and bacteria, the ecology of forest ecosystems, ecosystem processes mediated by microorganisms, mycorrhizal symbioses, interactions between microorganisms and macroorganisms, the biogeography of microorganisms, and the impact of management and climate change on ecosystem processes. He has coordinated and led numerous domestic and international projects, including those funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, H2020, and the Czech Science Foundation.
At the beginning of his tenure in the Academy Council, he was the author or co-author of more than 290 scientific papers published in renowned international journals and 12 book chapters. His work has been cited over 27,000 times, and his H-index was 88.
He is actively involved in teaching and supervising students at Charles University in Prague, Comenius University in Bratislava, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and the University of Helsinki.
He is a member of many professional societies, including the European Academy of Microbiology, the International Society for Microbial Ecology, the International Biogeographical Society, the British Mycological Society, and the Learned Society of the Czech Republic. He is also an editor for the journals Microbiome, ISME Journal, Fungal Ecology, and FEMS Microbiology Ecology.
Petr Baldrian is the founder and main organiser of the international conference "Ecology of Soil Microorganisms" and actively participates in organising other significant international scientific symposia. He is a member of scientific councils and evaluation panels for various grant agencies and research institutions.
