prof. Dr. Jana Osterkamp

Jana Osterkamp is a historian and lawyer who specialises in the history of the Habsburg monarchy and its successor states in the 19th and 20th centuries. Her habilitation on the Habsburg history of federal ideas and federal administrative practices was widely recognised in the international community, was also published in Czech as ‘Řád v rozmanitosti’ (Argo 2022) and will be published as ‘A federal history of the Habsburg Monarchy, 1818-1918’ by Oxford University Press in 2025. Her constitutional history dissertation was the first scholarly monograph on constitutional jurisdiction in the interwar period of Czechoslovakia. Osterkamp has been a professor of the entangled history of Germany and Eastern Europe and director of the Bukowina Institute at the University of Augsburg since 2023. In recent years, Osterkamp has been able to raise prestigious third-party funding for projects in the fields of political, religious and administrative history, as well as digital humanities.
