prof. PhDr. Michaela Hrubá, Ph.D.

Prof. PhDr. Michaela Hrubá, Ph.D., (*1966) is a Czech historian specializing in the cultural history of the early modern period, especially urban history and the history of everyday life. In 1990, she graduated from the Faculty of Education in Ústí nad Labem with a degree in Czech Language and Literature - History, then studied for a doctorate in Auxiliary Historical Sciences and Archives at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, where she received her Ph.D. in 2002 and then PhDr. in the same field.

Since 1991, she has worked at the Department of History at the Faculty of Education, J. E. Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem. At this university, she founded the Institute of Humanities in 2005, which she headed, and then the Faculty of Arts, which she headed as Dean in 2006-2010 and 2015-2023. In 2011-2015, she served as the Vice Dean for the Development at this Faculty, with the responsibility for the construction and equipping of the Faculty’s infrastructure. In 2012, she was appointed Associate Professor of Czech History at the Faculty of Arts of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, and in 2018, she became a Professor of Czech History at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Pardubice.   

Her research focuses on the cultural and social history of the late medieval and early modern periods, particularly the history of cities and urban society with an emphasis on gender aspects, everyday life and access to urban sources. It also focuses on regional history and the specifics of the development of border areas in the cultural, social and economic context of the development of the Czech state.

Michaela Hrubá is an active member of scientific boards (UJEP, Faculty of Arts University of Hradec Králové, Faculty of Arts University of Pardubice, FHS Charles University, National Heritage Institute). She serves as the Vice-Chair of the Council of the Institute of History of the CAS and Chair of the Grant Committee for the Humanities and Social Sciences at Charles University in Prague. In 2017-2023 she was the guarantor of the national evaluation of the VO Humanities and Arts (History and Archaeology Panel). Since 2023, she has been the Vice-Chair of the Council of Universities for Science and Research.

She is the author or co-author of 6 scientific monographs and more than 70 other scientific publications. She is a continuous lecturer of the older Czech history at the Faculty of Arts of J.E. Purkyně University, where she is the guarantor of the doctoral programme in Czech History.
