The Czech Academy of Sciences has appointed its new leadership for 2025–2029

The President of the CAS, Radomír Pánek, has named new Vice Presidents for all three research areas: Ilona Müllerová, Miroslava Anděrová, and Ondřej Beránek. Additionally, Jiří Kotek and Ján Matejka have been elected as members of the Academy Council Presidium via a secret ballot, along with Pavel Baran, who serves as the President of the Science Council of the CAS. The newly formed Academy Council convened for the first time on 1 April 2025.

The Academy Council serves as the executive body of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS). Including CAS President Radomír Pánek and Science Council President Pavel Baran, it consists of 17 members. Members of the Academy Council were elected by the Academy Assembly during its 65th session on 18 March 2025. The inaugural meeting on 1 April 2025 marked the beginning of their collaborative efforts and the allocation of responsibilities.

Based on the proposal of the President of the CAS, the Academy Council has agreed upon the following division of responsibilities:

Radomír Pánek

  • President of the CAS
  • overall management and oversight of the Academy’s activities in accordance with Section 10 of the Act on the Czech Academy of Sciences, as amended; development strategy of the CAS

Pavel Baran

  • Member of the Academy Council Presidium and President of the Science Council of the CAS
  • addressing conceptual issues of science policy and public funding support for science, in cooperation with state authorities in this area and the policy of research, development, and innovation (RDI) (Research and Development Council, Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, etc.)
  • grant administration for holders of the Doctor of Sciences (DSc.) title

Ilona Müllerová

  • Vice President and Member of the Academy Council Presidium
  • coordination of the strategic priorities of the First Research Area and management of scientific-organizational matters of CAS institutes in Sections 1–3
  • coordination of knowledge and technology transfer to the application sphere; liaison with the commercial sector and relevant providers (Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade)
  • oversight and strategic supervision of intellectual property utilization

Miroslava Anděrová

  • Vice President and Member of the Academy Council Presidium​
  • coordination of the strategic priorities of the Second Research Area and management of scientific-organizational matters of CAS institutes in Sections 4–6
  • liaison with relevant providers (Czech Ministry of Health)​
  • representation in the coordination of knowledge and technology transfer to the application sphere, cooperation with the commercial sector for the Second Research Area, and strategic supervision of intellectual property utilization for the Second Research Area

Ondřej Beránek

  • Vice President and Member of the Academy Council Presidium​
  • coordination of the strategic priorities of the Third Research Area and management of scientific-organizational matters of CAS institutes in Sections 7–9
  • liaison with relevant providers (Czech Ministry of Culture)​
  • coordination of activities in the field of archaeology concerning the protection of archaeological heritage and state monument care
  • representation in the coordination of knowledge and technology transfer to the application sphere, cooperation with the commercial sector for the Third Research Area, and strategic supervision of intellectual property utilization for the Third Research Area

Jiří Kotek

  • Member of the Academy Council and Member of the Academy Council Presidium​
  • addressing conceptual financial and budgetary matters and their implementation, including grant administration in the entrusted area
  • coordination of infrastructure activities of the Center of Administration and Operations of the CAS (SSČ)
  • coordination of support for scientific societies, including grant administration in this area
  • methodological oversight of public administration control systems at the CAS institutes

Ondřej Santolík

  • Member of the Academy Council
  • coordination of the involvement of the CAS in the European Research Area and related national program cooperation matters in collaboration with state authorities, including grant administration in this area
  • management of international cooperation affairs of the CAS, including strategic priorities and grant administration in this area
  • liaison with relevant institutions (Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs)
  • coordination of activities in the field of scientific information security (trusted research)
  • Deputy for the Vice President of the First Research Area in managing scientific-organizational matters of CAS institutes in Sections 1–3

Patrik Španěl

  • Member of the Academy Council
  • coordination of the preparation and course of the periodic evaluation of CAS institutes and alignment with the national system for evaluating research organizations
  • coordination of activities in the field of Open Science initiatives within the CAS
  • strategic involvement of the CAS in European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), Research Data Alliance (RDA), and the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA)
  • Deputy for the Vice President of the Second Research Area in managing scientific-organizational matters of CAS institutes in Sections 4–6

Tomáš Kostelecký

  • Member of the Academy Council
  • coordination of regional cooperation of the CAS with the state administration, self-government, public law entities, and other institutions within the regions, including grant management in this area
  • coordination of applied research in social sciences and humanities and coordination of interdisciplinary research cooperation between social sciences and natural sciences, and coordination of Science for Policy
  • liaison with relevant providers (Czech Ministry of the Labor and Social Affairs, Czech Ministry of Regional Development)
  • Deputy for the Vice President of the Third Research Area in managing scientific-organizational matters of CAS institutes in Sections 7–9
  • representation in the coordination of strategic priorities of international cooperation of the CAS, including grant management in this area, and in the coordination of CAS involvement in the European Research Area and related national program cooperation matters in cooperation with state authorities, including grant management in this area

Petr Baldrian

  • Member of the Academy Council
  • coordination of the agenda of excellence support programs within the CAS and in the international context (ERC, Horizon Europe, etc.), including grant administration in this area
  • addressing conceptual matters of program and project cooperation with the Czech Science Foundation (GA ČR)

Pavel Janáček

  • Member of the Academy Council
  • coordination of property management of the CAS and handling matters related to the management of CAS institute assets
  • coordination of publishing activities within the CAS, including grant administration in this area
  • methodological oversight of support for CAS institute bodies and internal regulations of the CAS (supervisory boards, founding charters of the CAS institutes, etc.)
  • representation in addressing conceptual financial and budgetary matters and their implementation, including grant administration in this area

Jiří Plešek

  • Member of the Academy Council
  • coordination and development of programs and activities of the AV21 Strategy of the CAS, including grant administration in this area
  • addressing conceptual matters of program and project cooperation with the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic

Soňa Ehlerová

  • Member of the Academy Council
  • conceptual matters and strategic priorities related to the presentation of research results of the CAS and its institutes, cooperation of the CAS with the media, and communication with the public, including grant administration in the area of science and research outreach
  • coordination of science popularization, science communication, and publication activities
  • coordination and strategic activities in the area of equal opportunities within the CAS

Martin Pivokonský

  • Member of the Academy Council
  • coordination and strategic activities related to the operation of CAS institutes in the field of environmental protection and sustainable development within the CAS
  • coordination of the operation, development, security, and application of computer networks of the CAS and its institutes, including grant administration in this area
  • coordination of activities in information technologies, systems, and digitalization, including grant administration in this area
  • coordination of cooperation with relevant providers (Czech Ministry of the Environment, Czech Ministry of Defense, Czech Ministry of Agriculture)

Ján Matejka

  • Member of the Academy Council and Member of the Academy Council Presidium
  • methodological oversight of external legislation of the CAS
  • coordination of cooperation with the Center of Administration and Operations of the CAS and its transformation, including fulfilling its purpose and supervising its activities in relation to the founding body
  • coordination of the operation, development, security, and application of artificial intelligence (AI) within the CAS and its institutes

Marcela Buchtová

  • Member of the Academy Council
  • addressing conceptual matters of scientific training and cooperation of the CAS with universities and joint institutes, including doctoral study programs and cooperation with sectoral research institutions
  • addressing conceptual matters of program and project cooperation with the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, universities, and providers, including operational programs of structural funds

Mária Zedníková

  • Member of the Academy Council
  • coordination of efforts to enhance institutional resilience within the CAS
  • coordination of the implementation of the NIS2 directive within the CAS and its institutes

The mission of the CAS

The primary mission of the CAS is to conduct research in a broad spectrum of natural, technical and social sciences as well as humanities. This research aims to advance progress of scientific knowledge at the international level, considering, however, the specific needs of the Czech society and the national culture.

President of the CAS

Prof. Eva Zažímalová has started her second term of office in May 2021. She is a respected scientist, and a Professor of Plant Anatomy and Physiology.

She is also a part of GCSA of the EU.
