What are the Open Science principles of the Czech Academy of Sciences?

25. 02. 2025

Sharing knowledge and collaboration are the basis for scientific progress. Developing the Open Science principles, which emphasise the accessibility and reusability of research results, is crucial for the Czech Academy of Sciences. The CAS management has therefore approved a set of recommendations for institutes called the Open Science Principles of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

The Czech Academy of Sciences has been developing open access to scientific information for a long time. By doing so, it subscribes to the principles of open science in accordance with the obligation to disseminate knowledge of professional research, the UNESCO recommendation and the embedding of Open Science in national, European, and international science policy.

“Open Science supports the development of science and contributes to more creative research discoveries and innovations. In addition to this, it increases the trustworthiness of scientific institutions, because it enables the verification of the data collected at any time,” says Jiří Homola of the CAS Academy Council.

At the end of November 2024, the management of the Czech Academy of Sciences approved a set of recommendations for research-oriented institutes. The document Open Science Principles of the CAS was created in response to dynamic trends in Open Science. It respects the current requirements and standards that have emerged in the meantime and become established in Europe and worldwide. The document creates a joint framework for implementing the Open Science principles at CAS institutes and provides recommendations for uniform management of open scientific knowledge. It also emphasises that it is necessary to ensure the protection of intellectual property.

Among other things, the document calls on CAS institutes to comply with principles such as openness, sustainability, and transparency. At the same time, it recommends, for example, that CAS employees manage data in accordance with the FAIR principles, store data within the timeframes set out in the data management plan (DMP), and deposit publications in trusted repositories.

You can find support in the CAS Library
Central support for CAS institutes during the introduction of the Open Science principles is provided by the Library of the CAS. At the end of 2022, a specialised Open Science Department was created and offers comprehensive information and advice through the website and contact persons.

“The department was established to provide Open Science services to CAS institutes and to ensure that the implementation of Open Science and compliance with providers’ new conditions is as straightforward as possible,” says Library director Magdaléna Vecková. The department now also offers the free online service CAS – FAIR Wizard for the easy creation of data management plans.

This research aims to advance progress of scientific knowledge at the international level, considering, however, the specific needs of the Czech society and the national culture.

President of the CAS

Prof. Eva Zažímalová has started her second term of office in May 2021. She is a respected scientist, and a Professor of Plant Anatomy and Physiology.

She is also a part of GCSA of the EU.
